Lynette Owens (moderator)
Lynette Owens is the Founder and Global Director of Trend Micro’s Internet Safety for Kids and Families program. With 20+ years in the technology industry, Lynette speaks and blogs regularly on how to help kids become great digital citizens. Lynette works with communities and school districts across the U.S. and around the world, recruits employee volunteers in over a dozen countries, and collaborates with NGOs and other technology partners to support online safety, digital citizenship, and media literacy education. She is a board member of the National Association of Media Literacy Education, and serves on the advisory boards of INHOPE and U.S. Safer Internet Day.

Peter Adams is the News Literacy Project’s senior vice president for educational programs and is based in Chicago. Peter began his career in education as a classroom teacher in the New York City schools through Teach For America. He has also taught in the Chicago public schools and at Roosevelt University and Chicago City Colleges’ Wilbur Wright campus. In addition, he has worked with the New York City Teaching Fellows Program, with After School Matters and as an independent education consultant.
Since joining NLP in 2009, he has coordinated classroom and after-school programs, served as Chicago program manager, worked on organizational strategy and developed NLP’s digital program. He has also provided news literacy training and workshops to educators and others throughout the area.
In January 2014 Peter became NLP’s senior vice president for educational programming, with primary responsibility for overseeing the classroom and digital programs and the curriculum and support materials.
He is a graduate of Indiana University, where he majored in English and African-American studies and co-founded an independent monthly student newspaper, and has a master’s degree in the humanities from the University of Chicago. |
Dan Gillmor teaches digital media literacy at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he also works to promote journalism entrepreneurship. A journalist for almost 25 years with a variety of newspapers in the United States, Gillmor was an early participant in the news industry’s digital transformation; he wrote a widely followed column and blog at Silicon Valley’s San Jose Mercury News, tracking technology and its impact on the economy and society. Gillmor is the author of We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People
(2004), Mediactive (2009) and the forthcoming examination of the increasing control that companies and governments exert over the way we use technology to communicate, tentatively titled Permission Taken. |
Áine Kerr leads global journalism partnerships at Facebook, overseeing a team focused on building products, tools and services for journalists and also working to improve news literacy for news consumers. She helped to create the Facebook Journalism Project launched in January 2016 and sits on the Executive Committee of the News Integrity Initiative; a news industry coalition that Facebook helped to found and fund.
Previously, she spent five years at Storyful, where she served as head of content and political editor before being appointed managing editor in December 2011 at the time of the company’s acquisition by News Corporation. Prior to that, Áine spent over seven years working as a political correspondent and news reporter with The Irish Times, The Irish Independent and The Irish Examiner.
Áine is advisor to the Institute for Future of Media and Journalism (Fujo), as well as being the co-founder of Online News Association (ONA) Ireland. She is currently undertaking the Sulzberger Leadership Program in Columbia University, and has a Bachelor of Education (B’ED) and a Masters of Journalism (MAJ) with Dublin City University.

Cynthia Machata, EVP Practice Lead at Havas Media. Cynthia is a communications planning strategist with deep digital expertise which includes data planning and building the targeting intelligence for a DSP. During her career she has worked in NYC and San Francisco for advertising agencies such as WPP’s Mediacom and MEC, Publicis’ Starcom and MediaVest and IPG’s Initiative. She has traveled extensively for large global clients such as Intel, Samsung, and domestic clients such as Procter & Gamble and Glaxo SmithKline. Her experience runs broad across industries including everything from technology, automotive, pharmaceuticals, packaged goods, retail to finance. |
